May it be by choice or necessity, there are times in life when we have to downsize our homes.  Some of us will even take a huge step and switch their regular house for a tiny home! But when moving time comes around, so does the difficult decision of what to keep, what to sell, and what to throw away. Once you have figured out what to keep, here is what to do with the rest.

Organize a sale

If you have a lot of furniture and valuables to sell, organising your own estate sale can be an option to consider. An estate sale occurs when professionals come to your home and label everything you want to sell. They also stage the items in an attractive way for potential buyers. During the sale, they will monitor the process and make sure no thefts happen in the house. Of course this has a price, but the extra benefit you can make from having a professional facilitating the liquidation is often worth it.

If you have a small number of items only, a yard sale is probably the way to go. Make sure to advertise the event in your neighborhood in order to get the biggest turnout possible.

Give to charity

Instead of selling the items you do not want anymore, you can also give them away to charity. When we are downsizing, many objects and pieces of furniture are still in good condition, and could desperately be used by those less fortunate than us. Remain attentive to what you are giving away however, as charities do not accept everything. More often than not, they will refuse clothing, appliances, or anything that is not usable. Make sure to not mix up junk removal and charitable donation. Give what you can, and sell the rest!

Get rid of the junk

Now, what to do with everything can cannot be sold or given away? There is more to it than just leaving it on the sidewalk. In most cases, you will need to call up a professional to dispose of the excess junk. Were you to chose to do it yourself, you would have to make your own way to the dump and rent the hauling equipment if you have bulky items or furniture. Apart from being expensive, this will also take up a lot of your time and energy, so why not outsource the job to someone else?
